George Edwards Prints

George Edwards (1694–1773)1743–1764

George Edwards (1694–1773), celebrated English naturalist and ornithologist known as the "Father of British Ornithology," produced some of the finest hand-colored copper engravings of exotic and uncommon birds in the 18th century. His meticulous illustrations defined scientific natural history illustration of the period. We always carry a selection of George Edwards prints. Our focus is primarily on North American birds and animals, though we also offer a small selection of his parrots and numerous lesser-known images — so price range varies accordingly. A lesser-known but fascinating chapter of Edwards's life: he assisted Mrs. Catesby in publishing Mark Catesby's second edition of The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands in 1753. The thought that these great naturalists knew one another — and how their work collectively shaped the world's understanding of the natural world — is one of the most compelling threads in the history of scientific illustration. Prints drawn from: A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743–1751) Gleanings of Natural History (1758–1764)
